You can work together in pairs (do both cover and ad), or solo (choose either).

What is "Branding"?

The American Marketing Association defines a brand as a "Name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers."

A brand can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. For example, Coca Cola is the name of a brand make by a particular company. The word branding began simply as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity — it affects the personality of a product, company or service. It is defined by a perception, good or bad, that your customers or prospects have about you.
A concept brand is a brand that is associated with an abstract concept, like breast cancer awareness or environmentalism, rather than a specific product, service, or business. A commodity brand is a brand associated with a commodity. Got milk? is an example of a commodity brand.

Powers of Persuasion: TED talks

In class today, we are going to Rory Sutherland on Ted and discuss the power of persuasion.

Dove Beauty Campaign: How does "Dove" change the perception of beauty? Evolution Pros and Cons
A parody of Evolution Slob Evolution

Then there is Onslaught vs Onslaught(er) As much as the Dove Beauty Campaign is a great idea with power positive results, it has other motives other than giving girls confidence and positive body perceptions.

What we don't like:
  • Colours & Shapes=90s
  • Outdated
  • Font sizing of SCHOOL overrides Fine Arts.
  • Message is vagueNot all of the marks make sense
  • Looks like ketchup or blood
  • Looks like fire through a window
  • Leans to the right
  • Needs cleaning
What we like:
  • Out of the box idea- exploding
  • Majors represented (but not all)
  • Like paint-like shape

Recommendations:
  • Unique
  • Bold/strong contrast/bright colors
  • Easy to draw
  • Be able to identify school with only logo
  • Needs to be simple & powerful
  • Movement
  • Keep basic essence of current logo
  • Maybe include motto: Explore, Create, Inspire

Fonts

Fonts are a complete assortment of type of one style and size. Fonts are expressive, they have personality and are a powerful communication tool. Letter styles are very important in design. They are an identifier of a company, an organization, an event, a band, style of clothing, or tv show... Font styles are so powerful, they can control the way we think and perceive about something.

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning).

We are going to explore the power of font choice and various applications of typography in design.

Letter Design

First we are going to size and copy paste the letter on the letter sized file. Then we are going invert the abstracted letter so that the letter will be reversed and flipped using the "REFLECT" tool on the tool bar. Once we have sized and inverted the design, then we are going to multiply the letter 9 times 3 rows, 3 columns. Afterwards we are going to print out your letter design and post onto the board outside. Post to your blog. Like this...

Illustrator- Creating a Symbol

Make sure you finish the drawing tutorial from yesterday. It will be essential for you to get the basics of the pen tool figured out for many Illustrator assignments that you will be doing this term.

We are going to practice our pen technique by tracing a pre-made symbol from the Illustrator symbol library. Open the Symbol menu, Window>Symbols. There are many to choose from, but keep it simple for starters. Drag your desired symbol to the page. Create a new layer Window> Layer> select "New Layer" in the pop down menu. Make sure the new layer is selected when are drawing. Using the pen tool, draw an outline of the symbol. You can try to colour and fill in colour (you may change the colour). Cover 100% of the symbol as close to the original as possible.

Afterwards, we are going to make our own symbol and add it to our symbol library. Here is a tutorial to show how to create a simple starburst and save it to your symbol library.
